bright indirect light (3-6 feet from a south or west window, or right next to an east window. Under a grow light, 6-10 inches away works well). Some morning direct sun (right in the window where sun actually hits the leaves. A strong grow light 4-6 inches away can substitute) is fine; avoid hot midday sun. Plants that fail to bloom are almost always not getting enough light. In low light (more than 8 feet from a window, or a north-facing room. A grow light 10-12 inches away works great if your windows are not cutting it), move closer to a window rather than reaching for fertilizer.Light
Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Allow only the top 1 cm to dry out between waterings. Always use room-temperature water - cold water can shock the roots. Reduce watering in winter when growth slows.Water
Moderate to high - aim for 50% relative humidity or above. Place on a pebble tray with water beneath the pot, or group with other tropical plants. Keep away from heating vents and radiators.Humidity

Crossandra infundibuliformis

Moderate

Crossandra infundibuliformis is an evergreen subshrub that earns its 'firecracker' nickname twice over: the funnel-shaped, asymmetrical flowers in shades of orange, salmon, and yellow are showy enough on their own, and then the seed pods literally explode under humid conditions to scatter seeds around. Indoors it grows to about 30–60 cm and blooms reliably from spring through autumn, making it one of the more dependably floriferous tropical houseplants available.

Fun Facts

In South India, Crossandra flowers (called Kanakambaram) have been strung into garlands for temple offerings and women's hair ornaments for centuries — a single garland can stay fresh for 12–15 hours, which is part of why the flowers are so prized in the South Indian floriculture trade.
