Zebra Basket Vine
Aeschynanthus marmoratus
Aeschynanthus marmoratus is the member of the lipstick plant family that you grow for the foliage rather than the flowers — the leaves are a deep glossy green marbled with lighter green on top, and a striking burgundy-purple on the underside, which is best appreciated in a hanging basket where you can see both surfaces at once. When it does flower, it produces tubular red-orange blooms, but the plant is honest enough that it is really all about those leaves.

Fun Facts
The genus name Aeschynanthus is a combination of two Greek words meaning 'shame' and 'flower' — a reference that botanists intended to describe how the vivid red flowers appear to blush, though the etymology has never been entirely agreed upon.
